Single Digit Nanofabrication for Nanoscience

Dr. Deirdre Olynick

Staff Scientist, Nanofabrication Facility, Molecular Foundry,
 University of California at Berkeley's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

 

Nanofabrication at single digit nano (SDN) resolution (below 10 nm) opens up new possibilities in nanoscience.  SDN applications at the Molecular Foundry include nanofluidics for single molecular detection, optical imaging of materials far below the diffraction limit, and structured materials for efficient energy production.

 

Our group has made significant advances developing new materials and processes for patterning SDN features.  I will highlight our work which combines "bottom-up" and "top-down" techniques and span areas such as novel dry development, SDN modulus characterization of resists, selective atomic layer deposition, double patterning, nanoimprint, and super selective, cryogenic dry etching. Challenges and opportunities will be discussed along with new applications.

 

 

Biography

 

Deirdre Olynick is a Staff Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Molecular Foundry, one of five DOE Nanoscale User Centers.   She received her Ph. D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois where she was a Fannie and John Hertz Fellow and awarded fellowship from the National Science Foundation and Department of Defense.  She received her B.S. from North Carolina State University.  Prior to coming to LBNL, she worked in the semiconductor industry including at Applied Material.  In 1998, she joined Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) as a staff scientist in nanofabrication, first at the Center for X-ray Optics and then at the Molecular Foundry.  Her current research areas include resist materials, self-assembly, nanoscale plasma etching, nanoimprint lithography, and patterning for energy.

[labmembers] Single Crystal Quartz Wafer?

Hello,

I am in search of single crystal quartz samples of thickness roughly 0.5mm and with the optical axis (c-axis) normal to the surface. A whole wafer or small pieces of one would be fine, especially if polished on both sides. Might anyone have some spare material that they would not mind letting me have? Thanks!

The last two days the floor of the lab has been scribed, vacuumed and moped.
All the tapes and sticky stuff has been removed from the floor around
the lab in different areas.
The walls and the windows has been cleaned.

The Monthly lab clean up  will be on  1/23/13 and 1/24/13, the clean up time will be

Both doors to the fab are currently broken - the sliding door does not automatically slide, and the front door cannot be unlocked by card.
Thus, I have taped the lock open on the front door, so that people do not get locked outside - better that than the alternative of just leaving the door open for cleanliness...

Please manually open AND CLOSE both doors when entering and leaving the fab - when I came, both doors were open... :(

[labmembers] Gowning Room Access, 1/21-1/22

Dear labmembers --

The gowning room will be closed on Monday, 1/21, from 6 am - 10 am, for
door replacement.
After 10 am, you should be able to enter and exit through the plastic
barrier.
The plastic barrier will remain up through Tuesday afternoon (1/22).
On Tuesday, from 8 am, a temporary gowning area will be set up at the
service entrance.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience
during this project.

[labmembers] More on door replacements.

Folks,
The double doors that cross the main hall between the bathrooms and the loading dock will be closed tomorrow for replacement.  You will need to take the eastern hall to travel from CIS to Allen.


In an emergency such as an evacuation the plastic can come down from any door impeding your progress to a building exit.

[labmembers] Gowning room door closure for replacement. Monday, Jan. 21st.

All,
The least intrusive day to change out the gown room door and frame appears to next Monday.  Monday is a Stanford holiday but 1/2 of our trades people are not on holiday.
The Plastic will go up first thing Monday morning.  The old door and frame will be removed.  The new frame and door will be installed.  During this stretch form about 6:00am to roughly 10:00am the fab will be closed to access.  If you have an emergency need for entry or anticipate an emergency need for entry please contact by cell or email by this Friday.

After 10:00am Monday, the plastic will remain until the sheet rock and paint crews complete their work.  There will be access through the plastic to the gown room during this time.
Once we have the schedule for rock and paint on Tuesday I will let you know.  

I understand EE410 will need to get through several times and I will make certain the crew is aware and sensitive to your needs.  Please be aware of any wet paint as you pass through the area.

Today the work on the chem passthrough doors has started.  There will be plastic in that area.  If you are unable to find chemicals you need today please contact me directly and we will do our best to deliver quickly.  Please think your needs out and plan ahead so you are not caught off guard.


Your patience is appreciated as the door replacement activity is nearly completed.
